To Kill a Mockingbird

Over the years, our family, the Ewell’s has been viewed as poor, compared to other white families living in the Maycomb region. We are seen as people who have no breeding, no education and no money. The only thing that elevates me in the community is the fact that I am a white man. I have always been lazy over, getting jobs in different companies and getting fired for being lazy and ineffectively.

All I like doing is being drunk to forget about my problems. Scout is one of the white people in my community and the other day we meet and she asked why I lost my job, “Why are you not working nowadays.” I replied, “I lost my job because I was lazy.” She was very astonished by the fact that I had lost my job because of laziness as she had never had of such a thing in the past. This made me feel bad. People have no respect for me in the community as I am viewed as an irresponsible and abusive. “Being disrespected is too much for me,” it is the dream of every person to be respected by all members of your community.  Due to the way that people look down upon me and my family, I have to look for an opportunity to elevate my status and that of the family.

After the death of my wife, my daughter Mayella becomes the family bread winner. I cannot help in any way because I have no work and nobody who is willing to employ me. Hence, she has been selling her body and bearing are sorts of abuses to feed her siblings. She started an affair with Tom, a black man. I dislike the black people because they do not come from my race. Mayella had a disagreement with Tom and their relationship ended up badly, leading to her accusing Tom of raping her.

“This is an opportunity I can exploit and elevate my name.” Is this not an opportunity I can use to elevate my family and gain respect for myself? Mayella, “I want us to take Tom to court; he has to pay for what he has done to you, my daughter.” My daughter agrees to lie in court and say that Tom raped her. I have to show the white members of the society that a white woman cannot be raped and go undefended. This will help me gain a good status in the society and I will be respected and appreciate by other members of the white community.

In the court, instead of all my white folks supporting me, they side with Tom. They conspire against me, in the name of justice. For instance, Miss Maudie ends up siding with Tom. After the court case, I end up losing and now the members of the public say that I am a lair together with my daughter. I cannot stand the shame anymore; I must avenge those who have caused the disgrace in my life. All those who supported Tom against me, will see my wrath. “There is no way I can allow people to be laughing at me, cause of a few people in the society, who conspired against me.” I approach Tom, “You will die today.” I am happy to kill him because I take revenge on him for causing public disgrace to me and my daughter.
