Diligence is defined as constant and
earnest efforts in undertaking and accomplishing a task. It is the consistent
exertion of one’s body or mind to performing the task as required and in most
cases surpassing the expectations. Diligence is one of the most critical mental
conditioning or factor one needs to cultivate to engage in practices or tasks
that become meaningful to them. Without the joy or enthusiasm of accomplishing
a job, the process of achieving the task becomes meaningless, and in most
cases, the efficiency is affected. With the diligence and passion of performing
this activity, it is possible to proceed with a task even after encountering a
problem. Diligence is a virtue that combines both persistence and perseverance (Siddiqui,
Fareed) .
There are different degrees and levels
of diligence. They include common or ordinary, high or great and finally low or
slight. The ordinary diligence is the normal drive in accomplishing a task, and
it is in every one. However, great diligence is only found in a few people. It
is the principle that guides high achievers, and in a way, people with this
degree of diligence get out of their way to do what they are required and top
it up. People with this extraordinary diligence go a long way to achieve goals
and in most cases leave an impression to those they were working for or with
whom they work (Siddiqui,
Fareed). People with low diligence are the opposite of the great diligence.
With low diligence, one does not accomplish a task not unless it is necessary.
If an individual encounters a problem in the process, they end up giving up on
the task. To accomplish a single task takes this individual a very long time
and in a way, their life stagnates. Lack of diligence is like lack of internal
drive that pushes someone to achieve goals.
