Semiotic Analysis Proposal and Outline

I am choosing to write a semiotic analysis on the subject of Lady Gaga’s music video of “Born This Way.” In the original music video, she starts with a speech on how people got choice. While it is obvious that the song is an anthem to be yourself and not listen to criticism, it could mean more than that. Lady Gaga is known in the cultural world as a bizarre artist because she comes up with the most out of the box ideas for her songs and presentations. In many of Lady Gaga’s interviews, she tells the listeners about how she didn’t fit in as a child and was often made fun of for her personal style, so it is essential to keep in mind the childhood of Lady Gaga when analyzing her work. Her art has a lot to say about herself and her childhood.

            While “Born This Way” has a very straight forward meaning for someone just listening, but digging deeper allows you to see some of Lady Gaga on a personal level. There are reasons for each part of her song and each element that is included. Analyzing each element will allow the listener to see that it’s not just about the straight forward meaning. As a pop star, Lady Gaga has the ability to influence so many people of all different kinds, so who is her audience? You have to ask yourself what she is trying to tell her audience by analyzing each and every piece of the song and music video.

Semiotic Analysis of Lady Gaga's music video "Born This Way"

Lady Gaga, following her debut into the music industry in 2008 till now, can be described as amongst the famous pop music stars in the world. According to Divine, “Lady Gaga’s single, Born This Way, was record-breaking, in terms of music downloads, breaking online music stores” (23). She is as well regarded as one of the most successful members in the modern culture industry, echoing internationally with individuals from all walks of life. Lady Gaga is recognized by criticizers for her so called disgraceful as well as promiscuous behavior. Since her entrance into celebrity in 2010, Lady Gaga has produced mass critical conversation. The essay will offer a semiotic analysis of the video Born This Way that was produced by Lady Gaga.

 

Lady Gaga, in the video “Born this Way,” attempts to create a post-race as well as post-gender aesthetic by means of collective scenes that have a mixture both of races as well as genders in the video’s background as dancers. There have been every kinds of conspiracy theories in relation to Lady Gaga’s probable involvement with the “Illuminati”- a covert society that was created during the Enlightenment.
