My
research topic for the rest of the semester revolves around the controversies
around the realization of the American dream. That is a phrase that has been
for so long imprinted in our heads as students, as teachers, in the heads of
every member of this society. It has been repeated over and over again that it
has become a general empty term used to generalize where we want to be as a
nation. It is often heard when elections are near and on every other occasion
especially where the struggling members of this community are. My argument here
my classmates is that the American dream is a complete brainwash both
figuratively and what the custodians of the phrase have done so far to make it
a reality.
The
American dream is nothing but a misapprehension. According to the American
dream, life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with
opportunity for each according to the ability or achievement regardless of
social class or circumstance of birth. This is an irony of sorts considering
15% poverty rate which only include the Latinos, African Americans, and Native
Americans, transgender and persons with disabilities and 80% gender wage gap.
There
are a lot of occurrences today that make me rethink if we have ever made a step
towards the realization of the American dream or it has been a mere stunt of
rhetoric and crowd-pleasing statement. The racial offenses today are more
evident than they were ten years ago. This is a very relevant example as this
monster affects even some of us here in school and it goes on not addressed.
When I talk about the American dream, it is holistic in the sense that it
touches the economic and the social welfare of the American citizens.
We are all part of this society. The young
people like us play a very important role in the future of this nation. We are
soon transitioning into the working class composition of the nation and voters
with a large say in government formations. It is, therefore, imperative that the
argument is brought to your attention as soon as yesterday. Among the
supportive facts are the increasing homelessness, unemployment percentage,
racial discrimination, healthcare systems, proper housing, gender wage gap and
discriminate taxation system.
I
think this argument would attract the audience of scholars and decision-makers
alike. It should attract the attention of the government officials, who double
up as policy makers and enforcers, the general public, economists, activists
and the general public. I think the naysayers are everywhere, particularly with
regards to this issue. I may be termed as a pessimist or one with myopic
vision, but I intend to carry this through every ear so that the message is
driven home. The naysayers are the liberal-minded who believe things are the
way they are because of a greater purpose, the individuals who don't believe in
every action has reactions, the people who are fueled by short-lived thinking
of luck.
In conclusion, the American dream is
nothing but a fallacy is not just a narrative that is to be peddled to gain
attention but an argument and in this case, argument integrated into research
to address the real issues affecting the American people. The aim of this is to
give true meaning to the American dream. ‘Meaning’ regarding knowing where we
are as a country, where we ought to be and what we can do to make changes to
the societal ills. Students like teachers and us alike have a great role to
play in this.
